Paul Laurence Dunbar High School Memorial Garden

Native Plants and Recycled Materials
With the assistance of many friends in the community including the U.K. Arboretum, The Ky. Native Plant Society, local horticulturalists and arborists, the Dunbar Memorial Garden will be comprised of a variety of native plant species. By using natives we will help preserve and improve our natural environment by providing the best possible food source for our native wildlife. Additionally, native plants are more disease and pest resistant and will thus require not only less maintenance but less need for chemical treatments and water.
Americans spend $30 billion dollars a year on their lawns - 10 times more than is spent on school textbooks!  Using herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers and an average of  9,000 gallons of water per week they introduce species of plants that demand much more special care and require that they work against nature rather than with it. By using natives we will be afforded more time feeling connected to the wonders of nature.
In addition to the use of natives, we will also be using as much recycled materials as possible. The pavers that currently make up the sidewalk at Dunbar are being  removed and a concrete walk will be installed. We’ve been   given the old pavers to reuse for our walkways. Plans for art installations will also revolve around the recycling of discarded materials and found objects.
